Hello, my name is Robin DePaoli. My journey to becoming a Special Education Parent Advocate began 18 years ago, when my son was in Kindergarten. My husband and I noticed that our son wasn’t progressing in reading as we had anticipated. We had asked several times for him to get interventions and none were ever done by the teacher. We had an SST (Student Success Team) meeting in January. The setting was extremely intimidating with 8 faculty members and just the two of us. Sadly, every single thing the teacher said about our son was negative. She only discussed his weaknesses, without mentioning any of his strengths, so we ended up walking out. At the next meeting, we brought in an attorney who focused on Special Education. To our surprise, since we had a lawyer, they added even more faculty members. They immediately went to holding him back and my husband said, no we will not talk about holding him back until we have exhausted all other options, including summer school. We opted for Summer School, and he surpassed all expectations.
That was the moment I knew that I needed to learn all I could about advocating for children who struggle in school. Parents who are not given the knowledge or skills to fight for their children’s educational rights need someone to do just that. I prayed about it over and over and knew this was something God had given me the skills and knowledge to do. I researched and studied continuously. I learned all about 504s and IEPs and started to represent parents as their Child's Advocate. This became my passion project!
At DePaoli IEP Advocacy, we understand that every child is unique, has value, has potential, and deserves the very best from the education system.
The reality is that many children struggle with challenges in their lives such as mental and physical health issues, trauma, as well as diagnosed and undiagnosed learning disabilities. Ensuring that your child receives the appropriate assistance in school can be a stressful and daunting task.
Since 2010, we have been advocating for students that are experiencing challenges within the Northern Metro-Atlanta school districts. We are dedicated to ensuring that each child that is at risk of falling further behind, failing, or even dropping out of school, receives the advocacy needed to get them back on track.
In Gwinnett County alone, the population is nearing 1 million people. There are 139 public schools that serve approximately 180,000 students. It is our sole mission to give every single child the opportunity to grow and prosper, regardless of any challenges they may face. It is our job to remove those obstacles and get them the strength to advocate for themselves.
We work for your child to secure their rights to equal education opportunities. We strive to foster effective communication between students, families, and schools. We do this through providing guidance and representation with:
We take a collaborative problem-solving approach to student advocacy through a three prong method:
